AppSim-Bench overview: inconsistent live-app states vs. controllable simulated apps

(a) In live commercial apps, the same task can face different states across time or devices (e.g. shifting search suggestions or cart availability), making fair comparison hard. (b) AppSim-Bench replaces live apps with 17 controllable simulated apps covering 557 tasks, removing recommendation- and content-driven evaluation noise.

Abstract

Mobile GUI agents can execute tasks from natural-language instructions, but their evaluation remains difficult to make both realistic and reproducible. Existing benchmarks typically trade off these goals: simplified apps lack real-world mobile complexity, whereas live commercial apps introduce uncontrolled variation from recommendations, advertisements, accounts, and changing content.

We propose AppSim-Bench, which addresses this trade-off through controllable simulated apps that preserve task-relevant interaction logic while supporting deterministic evaluation. Built through a coding-agent-assisted and human-verified workflow, it contains 557 tasks across 17 high-frequency Chinese and English apps. Its controllable backend data and outcome-based verification remove major sources of environmental stochasticity, enabling reproducible cross-model comparison.

Evaluating 19 GUI agents, spanning general-purpose and GUI-specialized systems, we find that autonomous mobile execution remains far from solved. The best model completes only 50.27% of tasks, and 28.55% of tasks are not solved by any agent. Further analysis shows that failures concentrate in longer workflows, numerical reasoning tasks, and inefficient trajectories marked by high action overhead and budget exhaustion. How AppSim-Bench is Built

AppSim-Bench has three components: Tasks described in natural language, Simulated Apps with controllable backend data, and Automated Evaluation via deterministic outcome verification. Simulated apps are produced through a human-led, coding-agent-assisted workflow: developers specify task requirements, data schemas, page hierarchies, and reference screenshots; coding agents generate candidate implementations; and human developers inspect, run, and correct them until the task-relevant UI flows and backend states match the specification.

Benchmark at a Glance

AppSim-Bench statistics: app coverage, task-length distribution, and numerical reasoning subtypes

(a–b) Task coverage across 9 Chinese and 8 English apps. (c) 283 Chinese vs. 274 English tasks. (d) Distribution by human-annotated reference steps (≤5, 6–10, ≥11). (e) 183 numerical-reasoning tasks split into counting, arithmetic, comparison, and threshold-filtering subtypes.

Main Results

Overall accuracy of 19 agents on AppSim-Bench, spanning general-purpose and GUI-specialized systems, with task-weighted accuracy on the Chinese (ZH) and English (EN) app groups, accuracy by task length (#S = human-annotated step count), and numerical-reasoning subtypes. Even the strongest model completes only about half of the tasks, and performance drops sharply on the longest workflows (≥11 steps).
